Apparently computers and computer parts are too cheap. DDR2 memory bottomed out a while ago and at some points was actually being sold under cost. Prices have risen slightly over the last month or two and is continuing upward. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the largest contract chip foundry making chips for Via, Nvidia, and AMD (ATI graphics cores) may be increasing their prices. Lite-On IT and Quanta Storage, the top optical drive manufacturers in Taiwan are hoping to increase prices by 3-10% depending on the type of drive. According to Digitimes, component costs have risen to levels outside of pricing tolerances set by both companies. PCB board makers are raising prices to their customers for the same reason, one of the key components in PCBs has increase in price 7% through the second quarter and they are looking to pass that cost on. OEM quotes for motherboards may be on the rise because of slow sales. and HP, Lenovo, and Acer have agreed (with Dell still negociating) to higher OEM prices for notebook.

At this point half of the cost increases are either still being mulled over or are still being negotiated, so it’s not clear if prices to end users will increase and if so how much.

I definitely don’t miss the days of $150 “budget” motherboards back in the day and the $120 price for a 1GB DDR2-667 stick from 8-12 months ago but it had to happen sooner or later. You can only make the same thing cheaper for so long before you have to stop lowering or increase the price to say in business. Also, I’d much rather pay a few bucks more than end up with total junk.

Havok, now owned by Intel, is one of the leading providers of physics APIs for games and applications and is now planning to offer it for free for non-commercial use and to “approved game developers on the PC platform” starting in March. It’s unclear why someone would go with Havok though at this point when Ageia, now owned by Nvidia, has their physics API free right now for non-commercial and commercial as well, so it’s available to free for anyone who wants to use it, not just those that can work out a deal with Havok and Intel. Another major advantage of Ageia’s API is that they sell dedicated hardware cards to offload physics processing name PhysX cards. PhysX cards haven’t sold all that well though, but with Nvidia’s purchase of Ageia hardware physics is coming to the masses since they’re working on getting Geforce 8-series and higher video cards to run Ageia’s physics on the GPU. Also, developers won’t be limited to only the PC, since Ageia supports the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. So when you compare the two, unless their’s something I’m missing, Havok doesn’t seem very appealing.

Well, Toshiba hasn’t officially announced it but Reuters is saying a source is saying that Toshiba has “entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business,” and that an official announcement may come next week. It’s unfortunate that the better technology lost. Feature wise, HD DVD’s current spec is the same as the yet to be released Blu-Ray 2.0 spec. HD DVDs are much cheaper to manufacturer than Blu-Ray discs, so their was a potential for cheaper retail prices on HD DVDs. From what I’ve seen, the quoted attach rate for movies bought by people buying HD DVD players was much higher compared to the attach rate with Blu-Ray. Still all of these things weren’t enough to sway companies to HD DVD. According to Gizmodo Fox and Warner wanted to go with HD DVD but Fox received $120 million and Warner received between 400 and 500 million to go with Blu-Ray. It’s unfortunate for consumers that Toshiba, Hitachi and Microsoft couldn’t make HD DVD work.

AMD is currently developing a CPU with integrated graphics named the AMD Fusion, with the first chip codenamed Swift. That’s all well and good but what’s the target market for this CPU? Who needs this feature? I mean, you’re still going to have to have a motherboard chipset for the PCI Express slots, PCI, IDE, SATA, LAN, etc, so what’s the point? If you have to have both a CPU and a motherboard chipset anyway, what’s the difference if you have a CPU with embedded graphics and a motherboard chipset for all the buses or a regular CPU with a motherboard chipset with embedded graphics? CPUs are usually better at achieving low power usage than graphics chips, but graphics chips are still pretty good, plus the first generation is just going to be based on a current Radeon design anyway. With that said though, CPUs are traditionally built using a lower process than GPUs and especially chipsets, so that could give the video portion a boost in power savings over a chipset with embedded graphics. That would only be the case though if AMD actually gets their 45nm process finished and in use, since currently AMD’s CPUs and chipsets both use 65nm process and their ATI Radeon HD 3000-series actually uses a lower manufacturing process (55nm). Infoworld says that AMD plans the Fusion to be manufactured using their 45nm process.

From the info on XbitLabs, they say “Swift will feature two x86 cores along with a graphics core and will be aimed at mobile computers,” and go on to say “Later on quad-core microprocessor with integrated memory controller is possible.” This information makes it appear that AMD is taking a step backwards by moving the memory controller from the CPU back to the northbridge motherboard chipset. This would lower performance but shouldn’t impact power usage that much. The last CPUs that didn’t have an integrated memory controller was their Socket A Athlon XP line. This also means it would require unique chipsets and motherboard designs, upping the cost of designing products to use the AMD Fusion.

Another thing to think about is if it has graphics in the CPU, that means the heat from graphics and the heat from the CPU will have to be removed by the same heatsink setup. The end result could be that the Fusion will need more cooling than what is normally required because their’s more wattage coming from one chip.

Much of the specs and information on the AMD Fusion and Swift are still up in the air, so hopefully it makes more sense once it gets closer to it’s release, which is supposed to be second half 2009.

And to get this (non)feature you have to pay big ($1,799 base price) and sacrifice insanely. I mean come on, it has ONE USB2.0 port! Yes, you read that right… The optional max CPU is a 1.8GHz, the standard one is only 1.6GHz. They put 2GB of RAM in the system but the memory is soldered on, so if it goes bad you’re screwed. It has Wifi 802.11n (draft) but does NOT have an ethernet jack. If you need one you could always use the ONLY USB2.0 port to get one. It doesn’t have any optical drive, you’ll have to go external USB2.0 drive for that. Did I mention their is only one? It has a “micro-DVI” port, so if you want to use that feature you’ll have to carry around an adapter to regular DVI. For a hard drive you have the unenviable choice between an 80GB 1.8″ 4200RPM drive that can be nothing but very slow or a very expensive but fast (at some things) 64GB Solid State hard drive. The piece de resistance is that the battery isn’t user replaceable. Batteries will go bad, their’s no way around it and Apple laptops are by far the biggest pain to take apart, and I’m sure an Apple laptop made to be super slim isn’t going to be a cake walk to get apart.

The last thing is ALL the pictures I’ve seen of the MacBook Air shows it with the screen straight up at a right angle with the base. For example the pics on DailyTech and Slate, though Anandtech has a pic that shows it at an angle past 90 degrees, but it appears to be a computer rendering and not an actual picture. Well, I don’t know about you but I sure don’t use a laptop like that. I tilt the screen farther than 90 degrees until I can see it well and their’s no glare or reflection on the screen. The potential problem with the MacBook Air is if the base doesn’t have enough weight to keep the laptop from tilting and falling onto the top of the LCD screen because of the weight of having a full normal size screen tilted past 90 degrees. If this does turn out to be an issue, I here by copyright iLegs as a device to keep the laptop from falling towards the screen when you tilt the screen back. They do show it at a slight angle past 90 degrees in the MacBook Air Guided Tour but it’s still unknown if their’s a threshold at which point it will topple over or not. This potential issue plus how rounded the bottom is, can you even use it on your lap or one leg without it sliding off or flipping towards the screen and cascading to the ground?

Ok, so lets review, you can get a notebook that is 0.76″ thick but you have to bring along with you an external optical drive, a USB2.0 Ethernet adapter, a USB2.0 hub so you can use more than one USB2.0 device at a time and a mini-DVI to DVI adapter. Having to carry even part of that with you greatly negates the supposed appeal of having such a thin notebook. Plus you can’t carry an extra battery. Going on a long plane ride and want to have extra battery? Tough. Once your battery dies you can slide it into your bag and stare in wonderment at the extra half inch you saved in thickness only for the rest of the trip. Plus the whole potentially tipping over thing and not being able to use it on one leg/your lap.

Unless you’re one of the 10 people that exclusively uses a laptop to go to the internet through WiFi only and needs it to be very small and portable I don’t get it. Plus, if that’s all you do with a laptop, why wouldn’t an Eee PC fit the bill, it has Firefox and WiFi. If you use the laptop as more than just an Internet Applieance then why is having a normal laptop that’s only marginally thicker such a drag that you’re willing to buy basically half a laptop for $1799?

The owner of C I Host, a datacenter/server co-location company, is currently talking up the fact that most datacenters don’t have a good plan for armed robbery. While I don’t necessarily disagree with his message, if you read this article here it makes it sound like this hit C I Host out of the blue and they had no idea something like this could happen… Well it’s happened 4 times in 2 years TO THEM AT THE SAME LOCATION! Well, not exactly as James Eckels, chief corporate counsel for C I Host, points out here “One of the biggest mistakes is that people are talking about four robberies. A robbery means than property has been seized through violence or intimidation. C I Host has technically only been robbed twice in two years. The other two were break-ins where things were stolen, but not robberies.” Is it me or is a “break-in” even worse than a robbery, since that fully means NO ONE was watching the servers/datacenter at all! Also,

The topic it’s self is pretty interesting though, as their isn’t a whole lot of information available on this kind of thing. I mean, you can look at different services to see the average uptime for a webhost or datacenter or colo but how are you to know how secure the facility actually is? They’re probably just trying to sell the computers and probably aren’t bringing the servers back to a warehouse to data mine the hard drives but who’s to say that won’t happen in the future… may make you think twice about checking that “save my credit card info” check box next time you check out of a webstore.

It’s been what 10+ years since Aureal (RIP) introduced their first card and started touting it as being hardware accelerated but it still sounds odd. What’s that supposed to mean? Video cards being called video accelerators make sense because it does just that, makes games run faster. Using the same logic, is hardware accelerated audio supposed to mean it makes sound play really fast? “Dude, how many SPS (sounds per second) can that sound card get?” I kid. I know they just mean a hardware DSP dedicated to audio so it doesn’t use system CPU cycle and I will give them that their really isn’t a great concise name that everyone will understand but doesn’t make it any less odd.

I mean seriously, not one card is listed as out of stock and some cards that were out of stock the day of the release are now in stock! How can all manufacturers and all stores sell out of the 8800 GT within days of its release and only sporatic cards showing up here and there are available now, yet the 8800 GTS which is based on the same G92 core shows no sign at all of shortages? Is the 8800 GT really that much more popular than the 8800 GTS or is something else going on?

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks there has to be something going on. The only thing I can think of is that Nvidia didn’t like being short changed in the deal, with manufacturers making factory OC’ed versions of the 8800 GT and charging even more money on top of the already inflated price of the base cards but paying Nvidia the same amount for the chips/cards and blocking some of the anticipation for the 8800 GTS by delivering a card with similar performance at prices nearly $100 cheaper and cutting Nvidia out of the profits. All this is completely an off the wall guess that may or may not be true… Color me Micheal Bay (except I didn’t make any awful movies)… But seriously, how can it be months later and 8800 GT’s are still kinda hard to get? I just checked and ZipZoomFly has 8800GT’s for barely less than $300, Newegg has none in stock at all, mwave has a few and TigerDirect has a few but it’s still slim pickings.

Anyway, it does appear that Nvidia may be trying to remedy the problem as they’re in talks with their main foundry partner TSMC to increase wafer orders for G92 GPUs and have added another, UMC, but that appears to only be for the new G98 GPUs.

A few months ago this topic blew up, and I typed this up but I’m not sure what happened since I somehow managed to not post it on my blog. Anyway, I found it today and decided to go ahead and post it.

As you probably know, Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith recently said in a Fortune article, that the Linux kernel violates 42 Microsoft patents, Linux GUI infringes 65 patents, that Open Office violates 45 and various open source e-mail clients infringe on 15. With 68 more patents supposedly infringed by other free/open source programs. Microsoft has now said it is not going to be suing users of linux and open source. That doesn’t rule out Distros or computer manufacturers that ship PCs with Linux preinstalled. Their goal is to strike deals similar to the cross licensing deal it made with Novell a few months back. Part of the problem with Microsoft’s plan is The Free Software Foundation has a proposed change to the GPL that would prohibit such an agreement. They said that if that happens, the deals like the one they have with Novell is only “one particular way of dealing with this problem. It’s not the only way in which the problem can be addressed.” I’m not sure what that means besides just suing the developer/distributors of Linux and open source but as that change to the GPL is still only proposed we’ll just have to see how this shakes out.

Microsoft also said that they won’t be publicly disclosing which patents they think are infringed, but “Microsoft has made the patents in question known to corporate Linux users and distributors.” according to InformationWeek. Which is one of problems Linus Torvalds see’s in Microsoft’s claims, stating that “Naming them would make it either clear that Linux isn’t infringing at all (which is quite possible, especially if the patents are bad), or would make it possible to avoid infringing by coding around whatever silly thing they claim.” “They’d have to name the patents then, and they’re probably happier with the FUD [fear, uncertainty, doubt] than with any lawsuit,” Torvalds predicted. Also that, “It’s certainly a lot more likely that Microsoft violates patents than Linux does, Basic operating system theory was pretty much done by the end of the 1960s. IBM probably owned thousands of really ‘fundamental’ patents,” Torvalds said in a response to questions submitted by InformationWeek. But he doesn’t like any form of patent saber rattling. “The fundamental stuff was done about half a century ago and has long, long since lost any patent protection,” he wrote.”

Sun CEO and President, Jonathan Schwartz replied to the situation, without actually mentioning Microsoft (or SCO, the company suing IBM for Linux copyright infringements). He talks about when Sun was pushing only high priced systems with Solaris OS on SPARC hardware and were loosing many customers to Linux OS and x86 hardware. “With business down and customers leaving, we had more than a few choices at our disposal. We were invited by one company to sue the beneficiaries of open source. We declined. We could join another and sue our customers. That seemed suicidal. We were offered the choice to scuttle Solaris, and resell someone else’s operating system. We declined. And we were encouraged to innovate by developers and customers who wanted Sun around, who saw the value we delivered through true systems engineering.” He then talks about some of the things they’ve done to get back the customers they lost. It’s seems to basically be fairly similar to what IBM has done and how most Linux Distros seem to make money, through customers paying for service and tech support. The main difference is Sun still sells hardware, they’ve made new UltraSPARC hardware and cheaper x86 hardware as well.

I agree that it’s pretty obvious that suing your customers is a bad idea, I’m not sure how Microsoft switching to a service only company would work out. I’ve heard people say that Microsoft sells Windows basically at cost and make their money on Office and server products. Well, why not make a “real” Office for Linux and start cashing in?

It’s unclear if they mean just for game support (like in game cut scenes and whatnot) or if it’s for downloadable content or if it will mean you can just put a disc in the drive or copy a Divx file over the network but it has been announced that DivX, Inc is working with both Sony and Microsoft on getting their consoles to support Divx. It’s also unclear if they will then also support Xvid decoding. Ideally they would have broad support for both codecs and let end users play whatever file they want but I’m not holding my breath on any of that. If they do let you play files, hopefully it has better support for Divx than some “divx compatible” DVD players that need specific resolutions, specific encoding styles and other requirements that are rarely used and may not be supported by some rippers.

It looks as though the $200 price for the Toshiba HD-A2 may just be because Toshiba was blowing out the old model before coming out with the HD-A3. BestBuy is going to be giving customers that ordered the HD-A2 on backorder an HD-A3 instead because “Unfortunately, the manufacturer has discontinued this item and we are not anticipating receiving any more inventory,” according to DailyTech. So the HD-A2 isn’t going to be around anymore, so what’s the price for the HD-A3 you ask? Well, all over the place between $200 and $300. The MSRP is supposed to be $300 and most retail stores seem to be selling them at that price. But those that are out of HD-A2′s, like BestBuy and Sears, have the HD-A3′s “on sale” right now for $199.99 and Amazon has them for $249.99 but those prices may go up after the HD-A2 supplies dry up. It’s hard to say what pricing is going to do but I’d say if you want an HD DVD player, it seems now’s the time to buy. It doesn’t seem to matter much either way, if you get a HD-A2 or HD-A3, as they seem to have pretty much the same features. Some of the guys that commented over at DailyTech (linked above) are saying that the HD-A2 may actually be slightly better as it allows downsampling of all audio to 1.5Mbps DTS optical out, where as the HD-A3 only does 640kbps DD optical out. So it depends on your receiver (or lack there of) as to which one would be better of if it doesn’t matter.

By the way, the best price I’ve found so far is TigerDirect has the HD-A2 for $139.99

Trend Micro Internet Security and Panda Antivirus + Firewall are the two antivirus packages we suggest in the store I work at. We’ve been using and suggesting Panda since the 2004 version. Trend Micro we’ve been using and suggesting since 2006 version (though we may have sold a few copies of 2005 but only a few). They seem to catch the most stuff and seemed to break less than Norton and McAfee, which is definitely a good thing. You know, who wants an antivirus that does it job and isn’t randomly broken all the time? Pfft. Anyway, ya, so yet again, another random problem with my folks new computer. Install windows, install all the drivers, everything’s fine. Install Trend Micro Internet Security 2008? DVD drives stop updating correctly. When you put a disc in everything works fine, it sees the disc and launches the autorun stuff and everythings great. Well, when you take the disc out, it never registers that the disc is removed. So it still has the file/folder list cached and the CD name cached. And if you interact with the drive in that state, click on it or if you had it selected before taking the disc out and then click on something else after it’s out, explorer freezes. Pretty awesome let me tell you. First I thought it was Daemon Tools that was at a fault. I uninstalled Daemon Tools and got it working randomly for a few reboots. Uninstall Trend and it’s back to working fine. The next day it was back to it’s old tricks and the DVD drives were acting funny. I did a full reinstall, only installing .Net 1.1, .Net 2.0 (as the ATI drivers require .Net), ATI/AMD drivers, Realtek sound, Realtek NIC and Trendnet wireless card. So far everything’s fine, as it’s always been without Trend. Install Trend without ever installing Daemon Tools, still messes up! So I have no idea what’s up, but if that’s your Antivirus of choice you may want to hold off for now. I haven’t tried it on any other computers yet, so it may just be something in this computer that it hates. I mean there’s a chance it’s the ATI IDE drivers conflicting with Trend, so it won’t affect you unless you have an ATI chipset. Or it could be that Trend 2008 is just busted, I’m not sure yet. But if you install it and run into your CD drives acting funny, it’s probably Trend.

If you have an eMachine or know someone that does, especially one that’s a couple years old, replace the power supply before you end up having to replace more parts when it fails and fries your motherboard or maybe more. In the computer store I work at, all of a sudden about 6 months to a year ago we kept getting eMachines with bad motherboards. It’s mainly been socket 478 systems but we’ve seen a few socket A systems from the same era. Even within the same socket type, the boards are different models, chipsets and layout. Also, the boards themselves don’t have bad capacitors. We didn’t know what to think. The first few systems we just replaced the motherboard and reinstalled Windows and it seemed totally fine. Well, one of the new replacement boards fried after only a month. Another took a few months before the board was fried. We got another eMachine in the store and I tested the CPU and ram in a new motherboard and it worked fine. I then put the board in the computer and it didn’t work anymore. No video. I took it out and used the known good power supply I had used before, no video. Tried the CPU and RAM in another new motherboard and it worked fine. It turned out to be the power supply that was frying all those systems! The power supplies themselves have all been manufactured by Bestec, but I don’t think it’s a problem with ALL Bestec power supplies. For example, HP uses Bestec quite a bit and of all the HP’s we see I’ve only ever seen one bad Bestec PSU in an HP.

So the moral of the story is unless you’re trying to find an excuse to replace that old eMachine, then replace the power supply before it fries the motherboard or more.

My parents have been using AOL since we put a 14.4k baud modem in our 386 running windows 3.1. So needless to say it’s been a while. They kept it because they didn’t want to deal with having to switch e-mail addresses and loosing all his e-mails inside AOL’s program. They’ve had DSL for at least a few years now, so they haven’t been using AOL for anything but e-mail for a while now. My dad’s been pissed for a while about how AOL tries to take over the whole computer installing whatever they want, popping up with upgrades that you can’t do anything but click “upgrade” on, running scans of lame anti-spyware that does nothing, etc. And even worse, he’s paying AOL for the privilage. Plus, even though he’s paying for it, there are ads in the interface! Anyway, he’s finally ready to switch and stop paying for AOL but they have 5+ years of e-mails “stuck” inside the AOL program. He also wasn’t looking forward to manually entering 50+ contacts into Outlook that already had contacts in AOL. Well, I did some looking and AOL has a program named “Sync” that is supposed to sync your contacts from AOL to Blackberry, Palm, Samsung and a beta for syncing with Palm. AOL’s page on it is http://aolsync.aol.com/. It looks like it doesn’t do anything for e-mails though and doesn’t say anything about Outlook. It does have a link under “Desktop/PDAs” that says “Sync your Address Book” but that brings you to http://www.plaxo.com/products which seems to only do contacts as well AND it seems to be part of some type of browser toolbar. Awesome just what I need, a random toolbar in IE or Firefox.

I then found ePreserver from Connected Software. I figured I’d give it a shot since it looked pretty straight forward, had a “30-day, 100% Money Back guarantee” and it was only $25 anyway. After registering I didn’t have to wait for a key via e-mail since it shows you right on the receipt page. I might suggest not getting the $3.99 “Extended Download Service” since I downloaded the demo/trial version and just plugged the key into that and it turned into the full version, meaning you should be able to just download the trial and make it the full version later as well. It was as straight forward as it looked on the webpage. After installing it, you just run it, plug in the registration info, pick which AOL screen name you want to export, choose a few settings, pick what you want to import them too (in my case Outlook 2003) and it does it’s thing. I didn’t even need to do anything to get it to show up in Outlook. I launched Outlook and it was all their. It automatically put the e-mails and contacts in the Outlook PST file, even made folders sorted like it was in AOL. I haven’t checked thoroughly but I did take a look and everything seems to be their. When I said above, the “choose a few settings” part, at one point you can change some settings on what it will import. I suggest setting it to at least “allow duplicates” under contacts/address book, since some versions of AOL make you create a new contact per e-mail address. I’m not sure how it would handle it if you had two contacts named the same thing with different e-mail addresses but I figured it’s easier too just do it manually than maybe not import some of the contacts. They have some screen shots of the process here.

I kind of would have liked a few more options, like if I wanted it to just make it’s own new PST file so I could import it into Outlook myself if I wanted too. For example, if you wanted to export one of the AOL accounts into outlook and put in a different computer’s Outlook or even a different profile on the same computer, you would have run the program and then export it from Outlook to a PST file manually. Kind of a pain but it’s doable.

Just to let everyone know, I’m not getting anything by linking them, we aren’t an affiliate or anything. I just figured I’d give everyone a heads up, since that’s part of why many people are keeping AOL because they don’t want to lose their info. I was glad it worked, since I’m building my parents a new computer, I didn’t want to have to install AOL so they could view old e-mails and hope it doesn’t break things (now or with a future “upgrade”).

The last few days when I had a chance I’ve been assembling a new computer for my folks. Their P4 2.2GHz was starting to be cranky, so they decided to replace it rather than have me try and track down what the cause of the problems. Well, after assembling their computer, I ran memtest86+ on the RAM, Mushkin 2GB DDR800 Kit. It passed. I installed a base load of Windows XP with no problems. The motherboard I’m using is the Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2 motherboard with AMD/ATI 690v chipset. I’m using the on-board Radeon x1200 video since my parents don’t game. After painstakingly finding the motherboard/video drivers on AMD’s convoluted webpage (you have to go to ATI video drivers section then go to integrated/motherboard and choose it based on what the integrated video is, not what the actual chipset name is). I installed the drivers and rebooted. The system starts booting but right after the windows logo screen, my three month old Soyo 19″ LCD says “Out of Sync” and goes to sleep. “What the hell?!” I hit the power button, it turns off after shutting down, so it did actually boot to windows like it should. I boot again, does the same thing. I reinstall windows, then the video/motherboard drivers but again, “Out of Sync.” I try plugging the monitor in directly (instead of through my KVM Switch) but get the same thing. I run Memtest86+ overnight and it passes all the loops. I already flashed the bios to the newest version, F7a. I try booting to safe mode, it works fine. I mess with the settings and make sure it’s set to 60Hz and set it to something low like 1024×768. I reboot and it boots through to the desktop just fine! I do a few things and it asks to reboot… “Out of Sync”! I was pissed. The next day, I try my parents 15″ Elements branded LCD from 2003 or 2004 and it works fine! After the Windows logo loading screen, the desktop shows up and it boots through correctly! I was shocked. Then I plugged my Soyo 19″ back in, it works fine now too. Now that it worked with the Elements monitor I can’t get it to mess up with the Soyo. I try my two year old 17″ AG Neovo LCD, that works fine as well. I reinstall Windows again, my Soyo still says “Out of Sync” unless I hook up the AG Neovo or Elements monitor, and then it works with all three! As a sidenote, the motherboard only has VGA. The AG Neovo and Elements only have VGA. The Soyo has both VGA and DVI but the motherboard only has VGA, so I can obviously only use VGA with it.

I’ve installed Windows XP before, with multiple different Nvidia and ATI video cards with this Soyo monitor and haven’t had anything like this before. For the record though, none of them have been on-board video. I don’t know what is actually making this happen but I’d say it isn’t going to be a Soyo only problem. We’ve sold Soyo monitors for a little while in the store I work at and haven’t had any problems like this, so not all Soyo monitors on all systems will have this happen. Also, other monitors may be affected, as very few companies that sell monitors actually manufacturer them. So other companies monitors made by the same ODM manufacturer that Soyo had make my monitor may be affected as well.

Just thought I’d give people a heads up if they were having the same problem, as it was pretty frustrating for a while there.

Oh, and just my luck, I was using ATI Catalyst w/ southbridge drivers version 7.9 and of course they released 7.10 a few days ago. So now I’m super curious if that would somehow fix it… So I’ll probably end up reinstalling windows again and use the new video driver. I’m just too curious! If I do I’ll post back with the results.

I was already kinda thinking of getting a Zune after learning about the cool stuff Microsoft is doing for the new Zunes and that the old Zune was getting all the cool new firmware upgrades. The final thing that sealed the deal was that Walmart.com has the brown Zune for $150! I’ve always thought that the brown looked kinda cool anyway and got undo flack from people and the press. I don’t know, it kinda looks military to me or something. Anyway, I ordered one since there really isn’t any other good options and that’s a killer price. My original Neuros with the upgraded USB2.0 backpack (bonus points for knowing what that is) is kinda dieing. I think it’s that the battery isn’t giving enough power. It’s going to be 4 years old next month anyway, so I already figured it was time to figure out which mp3 player blows the least. I say that because basically no one makes one that supports ogg audio and basically all of them need some dumb sync program. I just want it to mount as a hard drive in windows and I copy my music to it and call it good. Basically no one does that. The few companies that used too don’t make MP3 players anymore or don’t make large GB hard drive players anymore. Neuros is focusing on a cool linux based media player for your TV, kinda like an Apple TV only it doesn’t suck. Cowon/iAudio/JetAudio doesn’t seem to be making any new large GB hard drive based players anymore. iRiver doesn’t seem to make any large GB hard drive players anymore that supports oggs either. So what’s left are the “big name” companies, Sandisk, Creative, Apple and Microsoft. Well, Sandisk doesn’t make large GB players. Creative has never supported ogg and I’m not really a fan of Creative overall anyway (ask anyone about their soundcard drivers and software in general). Apple doesn’t support ogg and I’m not a fan of Apple either. I know you can use open source RockBox firmware, but it’s not that polished and support is kinda random. Plus, I don’t want to spend $250 and hope I can get RockBox running and hope I don’t hate it. Microsoft doesn’t support ogg from what I can tell, but the other features are pretty cool, and the screen is supposed to be real nice.

So I ordered a Zune 30… Wish me luck! I’ll keep you posted on how I like it. Though I think the new firmware isn’t out yet, so it’s not going to be as cool as when the new firmware is released.

Edit: And now the brown Zune 30 can be had for $139.99

Microsoft seems to be focusing on the right things for Vista Service Pack 1. Nick White’s post on Microsoft’s WindowsVistaBlog.com said, “SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues we’ve identified via customer feedback, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards… We didn’t design SP1 as a vehicle for releasing new features; however, some existing components do gain enhanced functionality in SP1.” That’s basically the list I hear from people as to why they don’t like Vista or why they’re holding off from upgrading to Vista. Well, those things and that Vista does too much stuff in the background but somehow I don’t think that’s going to change with a service pack. He also stated that they’re, “targeting releasing SP1 to manufacturing in the first quarter of 2008, but as always, we’re first and foremost focused on delivering a high-quality release, so we’ll determine the exact release date of SP1 after we have reached that quality bar.” In Brandon LeBlanc post on WindowsVistaBlog, he says that SP1 will be on Windows Update as an “important update,” so it should apply automatically once it’s available. When Windows XP SP2 was first released, the computer store I work at had a decent amount of computers coming in with complaints like, “it worked yesterday and now it’s not running right” and it was because some piece of software (or multiple pieces of software) wasn’t SP2 compatible. Brandon LeBlanc said he had no problems running any applications after the update SP1, so it’s looking good for not seeing problems like we did with Windows XP SP2. He reaffirmed what Nick White said that there isn’t much in the way of new features but there are a few refinements/retooling on some of the features that were already available and that the main thing was overall stability and performance has improved. In addition to “improvements in overall responsiveness of my PCs,” he also found improvements with Hibernation or Sleep, faster to copy files locally and over the network, improvements in accessing mapped drives, along with improvements to using an external monitor on a laptop. He was having a problem staying on his wireless network but haven’t encountered that problem after installing Service Pack 1. It definitely sounds like Microsoft is on the right track here and hopefully they can come through with their promises.

Ok, so multiple sites are reporting that the iPod touch is “very similar” to the iPhone. Is anyone surprised by this? It has the same interface, similar physical form factor, and has the same feature set except the no cell phone. Why was this news? To me it’d be more of a shock if it was drastically different than the iPhone, because that would be have been WAY more work for Apple. Then we’d have something to talk about and try and figure out why they did that. As it is, my response is *shrug* “ya, who thought it wasn’t?”

It’s still unknown if the iPod touch will have bluetooth and could only confirm what was already reported that it has WiFi support. The webpage that disassembled an iPod touch, iFixIt, did not find a bluetooth chip but they did say it could be one of the unmarked chips.
