MiniSD and RS-MMC/MMCmobile flash media cards on the way out

posted by Eric C. in Drives/Media, Hardware |

It’s being reported that Kingston will stop manufacturing both MiniSD and RS-MMC (also called MMCmobile) flash media cards in 2008 due to other small form factor media card formats gaining traction. Other Taiwanese manufacturers of flash media aren’t setting a date on when they will phase out either media type, stating they will instead let the market dictate when they will phase out production. The majority of the devices that use these formats are cellphone handsets and PDA/Smartphones but demand has been low because most new designs either use standard SD cards or have moved onto smaller formats like MicroSD/Transflash.
