Lite-On to offer BD-ROM at sub-$200 price point

Philips & Lite-On joint venture, Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions (PLDS) is planning on shipping a BD-ROM drive at a projected price point of $186 some time later this month. If it launches in the US at this price point, it will be the cheapest way to play Blu-Ray discs. Other manufacturers have BD-ROM drives and BD-ROM/DVD+/-RW drives between $240 and $300, with Blu-Ray burners still being priced between $400 to $500. That said, $186 is still higher than the suggested retail of $179.99 on the Xbox 360′s HD-DVD which can be connected to a PC via USB2.0, especially since some stores are selling the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive for lower than the $179.99 MSRP. It’s unclear if these drives will launch world wide but with PLDS saying that the initial runs will be small volume due to Blu-Ray components being on tight supply, it may not be available everywhere.
